Is that about right?

I know about it, since it is a crucial plot device in the scifi-books Hyperion Cantos by Dan Simmons.
(Incidentally, I have a book by Teilhard de Chardin lying on my bedroom table. My philosopher friend was spurred into reading it by way of the Hyperion books)
