I've heard that there is more to the cheesy Godzilla movies than meets the eye. The various monsters symbolize things in Japanese culture. The lack of realism is irrelevant, just as an object of religious iconography need not be in HD realism.

The first Godzilla movie (1956) was interesting, except for the footage of Raymond Burr spiced into the American release. In this movie Godzilla has round eyes like a Caucasian. They're kind of eerie-looking, too, apparently made of glass or some reflective material. He symbolizes atomic annihilation in this film, released only 11 years after the atom bombs were dropped. Godzilla is a menace in this first movie, but he became so popular that in all future movies he is more or less heroic, fighting other monsters. In all these other movies Godzilla has Asian-looking, slanted eyes.
