The five element are there for everyone to see, its hardly something that you need to rip off; they are in your face. In actual fact, it is only four elements: earth, fire, wind and water, the fifth is the space in which the other four elements are contained. Wood and metal come from the earth element, they are the by-products of the combined four.
And in regards to similes, it is simply a figure of speech.
