The issue really is that a lot of popular science energy has gone to promote string theory, but people like Greene are pretty clear that at present it's pure conjecture.
They spend a lot of time arguing that it's convincing and beautiful conjecture, but I'm yet to see a claim that it is a viable TOE yet.
